The Global Capitalism and Law Research Group, launched in 2015 with the support of a “Big Ideas” grant from the Buffett Institute on Global Affairs, is an interdisciplinary community of researchers investigating the political, social, legal, and normative underpinnings of successful and politically sustainable local, national, and global economies. Our objective is to define new approaches to conceptualizing and assessing the successes and challenges of global capitalism, historically and in the current moment, for different countries and for different stakeholders. .

The Global Capitalism and Law Research Group hosts master classes, reading seminars, and invited speakers, with the goal of bringing together faculty, graduate students, and visitors from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives to create a vibrant research community.

Master Class

The goal of a master class is to learn how senior scholars from different disciplines think about the relationship between global capitalism and law. A master class is different from a seminar discussion of work in progress because the goal is to better understand the assumptions, insights, and knowledge that shape the scholar’s thinking on our topic.

Politically Sustainable Capitalism

Our objective is to define new approaches to conceptualizing and assessing the successes and challenges of global capitalism, historically and in the current moment, for different countries and for different stakeholders. We have built our community first by learning how different disciplines conceptualize and debate global capitalism, meeting monthly to discuss readings, inviting top scholars from diverse perspectives and disciplines to provide master-classes about our topic, organizing co-taught interdisciplinary graduate seminars and workshops, and co-authoring.
